“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
The Word of God is powerful, living and active. God’s Word is one of our richest resources as believers. It contains everything we need to guide us and instruct us. The Word of God is filled with his promises. It speaks the truth about who we are in Christ. Scripture is where we go to dispel every lie the enemy throws at us. The Word of God helps to build our faith and dismantle our unbelief. We find strength, hope, and power in the very words printed on each page. The more scriptures we memorize and familiarize ourselves with, the greater it will be as a weapon of warfare for us. We have to know God’s Word to utilize it.
The enemy likes to play unfair. He is really good at inundating our thoughts with lies and half truths. He uses fear tactics and tries to bully us around. When we combat his strategies with the Word of God, the enemy is defenseless against it. He, too, knows scripture and is held to its parameters. When we find ourselves in a situation where our prayers feel feeble and the enemy seems big, we can saturate ourselves in scripture and meditate on its words until the truths of God’s word feel bigger than the one’s the enemy is trying to use against us. When our commanding prayers don’t seem to be making headway, we remind the enemy of God’s promises, his laws, and rules of engagement found in the Bible, and he must obey.
Spiritual battles require spiritual weapons. God’s Word not only combats demonic power, but it cuts through our fleshly stubbornness. In 2 Samuel 12, we encounter David in the midst of his affair with Bathsheba and cover up with the murder of her husband. God sent the prophet Nathan to speak God’s word over David. The word was what finally got through to David, and he repented of his sin. Sometimes, the Word is the only thing that will break through the enemy’s stronghold. Thank God for his precious and powerful weapon!
Listening Prayer:
Holy Spirit, what scripture do I need to have victory over the enemy in my life today? Look up what he shows you. Meditate on those words until you feel victory. Bonus: memorize what scripture he brings to mind!
Prayer:
O God, We thank you for the riches of your Word. Thank you for the abundance of life giving instructions. Help us to dive deep into its pages. Instruct us and lead us as we meditate on each scripture. May your Word come alive in us and fill us with faith. May your Word dispel the lies of the enemy and fill us with your truths. Holy Spirit, teach us how to wage war with your words. Direct us to the scriptures we need and those we need to set people free. In your powerful name, Amen.
